POTTER: ABOVE THE LAW?

In The Sorceror's Stone, Harry was given a direct order from Madam Hooch (thanks Luna) not to fly while she stepped away for a moment. He took off on his broom anyway, which is normally cause for expulsion from the school. In Harry's case though, it brings him the honor of being chosen as the "Seeker" for his Quidditch team. Can you think of any other times in any of the books where Harry's actions lead to the opposite result from what was expected? Is Harry above the law or is he just a lucky guy, or could there be another explanation?

Well when voldemort tried to kill harry, he didnt get killed, he became famous! But, I guess that wasnt really Harry's doing, it was voldemort. how dreamy. <3

Dumbledore said...

Yes, but that was a time when the result was different than you'd expect. Good one Ginny.

Dumbledore said...

fiiiiiive points for Grrrrryffindoooor! :)

Please professor Dumbledore, I believe it was Madame Hooch, not Professor Flitwick, who told Harry not to fly on the broomstick and whatnot.

Harry knew that he wasn't supposed to use the invisibility cloak to wander around Hogwarts. He basically breaks "the law", but this allows him to solve many mysteries and save many lives. I'd say Harry is more than just lucky, he's blessed and surrounded by positive energy because of the deep feelings of love and loyalty he shows his friends and family.

Luna Lovegood said...

Awww. That is so touching! (sniffle)

I thought of another thing. When Harry told Cedric to take the Triwizard Cup, he was being nice. But that one simple action resulted in Cedric getting killed. So sad.

Dumbledore said...

One time when Harry used "underage magic" and blew his Aunt Petunia up like a hot air balloon, he didn't get kicked out of Hogwarts! If Crabbe or Goyle had done that, they would have been outta there!!

Dumbledore said...

Glad to see you finally flew in Hedwig....your wings were so quiet, I barely heard you.

Prof. Snape always seemed to feel that Harry thought he was "above the law." (This caused a lot of turmoil between them, because it was a personal conflict between Snape's ultimate loyalty to Harry and Dumbledore and his resentment against Harry's dad and jealousy that Lily didn't choose him.)

Although Harry did not enter himself in the Triwizard Tournament, the fact that his name got entered and he then was chosen for the competition gave the rest of the students reason to believe that Harry thought he was better than everyone else. (This is an example of when Harry's NON-action resulted in an unexpected outcome.)

I would've hated going to school and having everyone thinking that I'd broken the rules when I really didn't; Harry had to deal with that a lot throughout all the books.

Dumbledore said...

Excellent Point Tonks....and I thought that since his name was entered and he wasn't old enough to be in the Tri-Wizard tournament, that he would be disqualified from participating. Not true...not true at all. Maybe I, (the headmaster) knew that things must happen for a reason! I'm smarter than I thought!

Fleur said...

yes you are dumblyzdore

i'm glad to see Hedwig out of her cage again!

A huge thing he did was go to the third floor corridor. How did he escape Voldemort when he hardly knew how to use magic? I'm surprised no one brought that one up. Also the DA...he was very bold to start that group right under Umbridge's nose. I mean if you're going to do that...you might want to do a lot of thinking. As Hermione pointed out in the 5th book, Harry has a "saving people thing." He isn't trying to break any rules, he is trying to save lives. Tonks and Lupin both lost their lives and Harry was ashamed. He started feeling "survivor's guilt" but I guess I'm off the subject. Anyway, Harry wasn't the only one above the law. Lupin and Tonks broke the law but they didn't survive. RIP Tonks Glad to see your spirit is up and at em, Tonks!

true Ronald , i suppoze

Fleur said...

farewell

Dumbledore said...

Wow Ron, the point you make is a great one. He does break the rules...but for a noble cause (saving people). Is there a difference between breaking the rules with good intentions and just breaking the rules?

Fleur said...

yez

Of course their is Dumbledore Harry,me,and Hermione do it all the time!!!

Fred said...

hello i just joind i wonder if you can figure out who i am

Neville Longbottom said...

How about when he broke into the Chamber of Secrets. Instead of being expelled,he was awarded for saving the school.

Fleur said...

true

Luna Lovegood said...

Yes excellent point. Ahh Snape what are you doing here? No please don't comment I think you----

Luna Lovegood said...

Now this is Snape writing, NOT that foolish girl Luna Lovegood...she is loony. Anyway, I would like to share my belief that Potter is indeed above the law--anywhere but MY classroom.

Yes Luna, you can have your computer back....

Maureen said...

of course I know who you are Fred...you are my son! :) Now remember, this is the room we tell about how Harry is above the law or just plain lucky!

Dumbledore said...

Fleur,
I was wondering how you felt about being in the Tri-Wizard Tournament with Harry. Did you feel like that situation was unfair? You seemed to be a pretty good sport. You really didn't know much about Harry at the time...did you think he put his own name in?

Dumbledore said...

Luna!!
Snape needs to get back to the dungeon...too mouch fresh air makes him light headed.

Snape you are needed in Potions Class.
-Dumbledore

Luna Lovegood said...

This is Snape again, saying that Dumbledore is right, I should be getting back to the dungeons.

Snape out, dawg.

Luna Lovegood said...

Yes this is Luna and will someone please comment? This is driving me nuts.

Luna Lovegood said...

I know another thing....when Harry was trying to save Sirius he sort of broke into the Ministry. That's not right!!!!!

Snape: Yes Luna very good. I going to hate myself for this but 10 points for Ravenclaw.

Luna: SNAPE GET OFF MY COMPUTER!!!!!!

Fleur said...

dumblyzdore, about the tri-wizard tournament, it seemed unfair at firzt, but i soon found out he was very advanced for hiz age, and soon he was ahead of me. he waz kind once i got to know him.

Fleur said...

at first i assumed it waz himself who put hiz name in because my mistress did. but i saw fred & george grow beards also. i knew eventually that he vould never do that.

Voldemort said...

Dumbledore, Harry blew his Aunt Margaret up, not Aunt Petunia.

Voldemort said...

Well, there was the time in the fifth book when he used a spell in front of Dudley to ward off the dementors. He would have been expelled, fairly or not. Probably not fairly.Though it would have saved me some trouble. *grumble, grumble*

Voldemort said...

However, he wasn't expelled & I wasn't spared any trouble. How darn anoying.

Luna Lovegood said...

And to be really accurate, Voldy, it was his Aunt Marge. And I'm glad he wasn't expelled because if he had been I never would have met him!

Dumbledore said...

Voldemort yup you're right (Did I say that?)...what was I thinking? Well those nice family dinners never seem to work out for Harry and the Dursleys.

Voldemort said...

YOU'RE AGREEING WITH ME!!!!?????!!!!! I feel wooosey....*collapses* *gasps for air*. Dumbledore, I'm dieng, but before I die I must.........

Voldemort said...

Sing!!!!!! Things that bother you, never bother me, I feel happy and fine. Haha! Living in the sunlight, laughing in the moonlight having a wonderful time! *ack* *cough* *dead* ):

Luna Lovegood said...

Hooray, Voldy's dead!!! Sure saves Harry a lot of trouble.

Voldemort said...

Also, Potter has repeatedly gone to Hagrid's hut after hours and has never gotten expelled for it. He only got into trouble for it once! Also instead of being put-down by Umbridge's punishment he was strengthened by it. But then that can't be considered breaking rules so much as an unexpected ( or maybe it is expected? ) reaction.

Voldemort said...

Luna you are acting very mean to me. Excellent job!!!!!

Fleur said...

voldy vould you quit trying to annoy people younger than you? (plus you are an very oldy voldy!)

Voldemort said...

Potter has also caused ME trouble and gotten away with it. He broke the orb that had the prophecy in it and instead of getting killed he escaped!!!! Darn him !!!!!!!!!!

Voldemort said...

I'm noooot O-L-D!!!!!!!

Voldemort said...

I just got bald a little early......

Voldemort said...

And my eyes are red because I stay up late. Veeeerrrry late.

Fleur said...

face it OMV (oldy-moldy-voldy) you are like, 55 years old. and now you are molding in the chamber off the Great Hall at Hogwarts. RIP, i mean RWP (rest without peace)

Dumbledore said...

I just saw this comment on another website and it seemed to fit well with what this post is about.

Harry’s occasional rebellions against the rules are not vices or failings. Rather, they enhance his heroism because they show that he is able to think for himself and make his own judgments. The contrast to Harry in this respect is the perfectionist Hermione, who never breaks a rule at the beginning and who is thus annoying to both Harry and us. When she eventually lies to a teacher, showing that she too can transcend the rules, Hermione becomes Harry’s friend. One of the main lessons of the story is that while rules are good and necessary, sometimes it is necessary to question and even break them for the right reasons.

Maureen said...

Did someone say 55 was old?

Fleur said...

well, he's like, way older than 55. that was just a rough estimate.

Voldemort said...

There's also the time when Hermione brewed the poltergeist potion, and Ron and Harry infiltrated the Slytherin common room. They were almost discovered. If they had been discovered Draco would waste no time telling Snape or Mcgonegall. This would probably have gotten them expelled. Hermione had said they were breaking about 50 rules. And Fleur, I will not be goaded into further argument with you. I'm not Ron.

Fleur said...

polyjuice potion! not poltergeist!

Dumbledore said...

Just when we think the Dark Lord has perished and is beyond returning to our world....heeeee's baaaaaaaaaaaaack!!

Puck said...

Ron here a.k.a the easily goaded one (any takers!)

Voldemort said...

Fleur I'm not talking to you anymore, and I couldn't find the correct spelling when I wrote that comment and I couldn't remember the name. Besides, I prefer the wand over potions any day. And Ron, you forgot the period after the last A in a.k.a.

Fleur said...

OMV, you are very bad @ holding down an arguement. you always chicken out of it! ~

Voldemort said...

Uh, maybe it's because you annoy the heck out of me. Seriously, I almost don't want to blog because of you. I mean, you like don't no when you need to stop.

Fleur said...

you don't know when to stop killing people and their sanity!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Luna Lovegood said...

PEOPLE BE QUIET ALREADY!!!!!! I mean seriously, this blog is for fun not meanness! You guys really need to stop fighting.

Voldemort said...

Tell that to her!!!

Fleur said...

i am calmly stating the facts (why did you have to ruin a perfectly good arguement?)

Luna Lovegood said...

Voldemort, calm down. You have some serious anger management issues. And Fleur, I am not ruining a good argument, I am starting another one!

Fleur said...

good job. i'm so proud of you!~ also, OMV does have very bad anger management issues!

Cho Chang said...

There was the time in the second book when harry went to the library under the invisibility cloak even though no one told him not to he was still up after hours walking around the school.

Fleur said...

Very true (whew I'm glad that's over)
